WITH LOVE,
GRANDMA AND DES
we’d Love to have you over
Desireé and Grandma
Mama Byrd didn't grow up in the kitchen. For most of her life, she didn't need to — her mother and her older sister Honeypie were the cooks, and the kitchen belonged to them. It wasn't until she was a newly married woman in her twenties that she realized she had no idea what she was doing. So she did what you did back then — she called her mother. Every single day. How do I fix this? How long does that take? How do I make it taste like yours? One phone call, one question, one dish at a time.
When her mother passed, she turned to Ruby, her baby sister, who had held onto all of their great-grandmother's recipes like sacred things. And that's how the knowledge moved — hand to hand, voice to voice, through grief and through love.
Now, Mama Byrd is 86, and the recipes that were passed to her, she is passing forward. Every week, she and her granddaughter Desireé pull up their chairs and make something together. And Mama Byrd will tell you — watching Des learn, seeing it all continue — that's become her favorite part.
Sunday Forever exists to hold onto something. It started as Des's way of keeping a record, of making sure not a single recipe got lost. But somewhere along the way, it became clear that there were others out there who had lost theirs — and that this was for them too.
This is for all of us. The ones holding on, the ones looking back, and the ones still making memories worth keeping.
